With the rise of AI and hacking techniques, fraudsters are becoming smarter, using more sophisticated methods than one can imagine. One such case was reported in Kolkata, where the resident was duped by a fake gas agency executive and lost ₹1.3 L in the fake gas subsidy scam.

Fraudster Promised a Fake Subsidy Amount to the Victim
As per the victim, Nabakumar Manna, he received a video call from a person posing as the gas agency. The scammer cleverly used the actual name of the gas dealer, making the call appear legitimate.
Believing that the caller and, victim stayed on the call.
The fraudster then inquired about the existing gas subsidy amount and offered him ₹220 instead of ₹19.50.
The scammer further lured the victim by telling him the reimbursement of ₹5500 was pending since the lockdown.
To receive the promised amount, the scammer sent the victim a fraudulent payment link. However, instead of receiving money, Manna’s bank account was emptied.
- On March 13, around 60% of his bank balance vanished.
- Within a few hours, his entire savings of ₹1.3 lakh were wiped out.
Realizing he had been scammed, Manna immediately filed a complaint at the local police station.
