Tirupati Engineer did ₹60 Lakh scam fooling 200 people in Fake Mobile Sale

online selling fraud

In an alarming case of cyber fraud, a computer engineer from Tirupati referred to as Marisarla Balaji Naidu, was arrested for scamming over 200 individuals by exploiting an online platform for fake mobile sales.

Since 2018, Marisarla generated nearly ₹60 lakh through these fraudulent activities, with 19 cases registered against him across districts in Andhra Pradesh.

How the Scam Worked: Marisarla’s Clever Strategy

Murli targeted people selling used mobile phones on OLX. His method was a bit complex which made it difficult for victims to identify the scam:

  1. Contacting Sellers: He would approach sellers, agree to their prices without negotiation, and secure their contact details.
  2. Creating Fake Listings: Murli would list the same phone at a much lower price, attracting eager buyers.
  3. The Trap: Pretending to be the seller’s brother, he gained buyers’ trust and instructed them not to discuss transaction details with the seller.
  4. UPI Payments: He convinced buyers to pay through UPI, promising swift delivery.
  5. Blocking Victims: After receiving the payment, he blocked both the buyer and the seller, severing all communication.

This evil tactic allowed Marisarla to exploit the trust of hundreds of victims, leaving them waiting for phones that never arrived.

How Police Identified this Serial Fraudster?

As complaints poured in, authorities began investigating Marisarla’s activities. Key findings include:

  • Past Arrests: Murli had a history of similar frauds, with 138 complaints filed against him on the National Cybercrime Reporting portal.
  • Multiple Identities: He used 23 SIM cards from different service providers to evade detection.
  • Gambling Addiction: The money he earned was lost on online betting apps like DafaBet, SARA, and Rummy Time.

Marisarla’s arrest serves as a reminder of the increasing risks in online transactions and the need for caution in digital marketplaces.

Lessons for Online Safety

This incident underscores the importance of due diligence when engaging in online transactions. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
