Noida Businessman Lost ₹1.15 Crore in WhatsApp Investment Scam

With the rise of digital communication, scammers have found new ways to deceive unsuspecting individuals. One such case involves a businessman who fell victim to a sophisticated WhatsApp investment scam.

What started as a small test investment quickly escalated into a massive financial loss. This blog sheds light on how the scam unfolded and the crucial lessons to learn from it.

Unfolding the Scam

On January 27, 2025, a businessman received a WhatsApp call from a woman who introduced herself as Rishita, a financial analyst. She provided links to two investment websites, promising high returns and encouraging him to invest.

To test the offer’s legitimacy, the victim made an initial investment of ₹1 lakh. To his surprise, he was informed the very next day that he had earned a profit of ₹15,040.

When he successfully withdrew the amount, his confidence in the scheme grew, unknowingly falling into a well-planned scam.

Encouraged by the seamless experience and continuous praise from Rishita about his financial decisions, he decided to invest a much larger amount of ₹65 lakh.

Shortly after, the scammer displayed an inflated portfolio showing a total of ₹1.9 crore, further strengthening the illusion of profitability.

However, things took a drastic turn when the victim attempted to withdraw his funds in late February.

Initially, the scammer demanded ₹3.16 lakh as a ‘tax payment’ to process the withdrawal. Trusting the scheme, the victim paid the amount in early March, expecting his funds to be released.

Despite this payment, the withdrawal request remained unfulfilled. The fraudsters then insisted on an additional ₹18.6 lakh as a ‘conversion charge,’ promising that the money would be released within 24 hours.

Even after this payment, the funds remained inaccessible. When the scammer later demanded another ₹40 lakh, the victim finally realized that he had been deceived.

Recognizing the fraud, he immediately reported the case to the respective authorities, exposing yet another instance of a sophisticated investment scam targeting unsuspecting investors.

Here are some of the tips that can prevent you from such investment scams.

  1. Verify Sources: Always double-check the legitimacy of financial analysts and investment platforms before making any transactions.
