Which Cyber Crimes Can Be Reported at cybercrime.gov.in?

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal handles all types of cyber crimes, but the categories most relevant to stock market and investment fraud victims are under the Financial Fraud section.

Trading and investment scams where someone convinced you to invest through an unregistered app, Telegram channel, or website.

Online fraud where you paid for a service or product and received nothing.

Prepaid task scams where you were asked to complete tasks and then told to pay more to release your earnings. Social media impersonation is when someone uses a known firm’s or person’s identity to defraud you.

Unregistered advisory scams where an entity without SEBI registration collected money by claiming to provide guaranteed returns.

If the entity you paid was SEBI-registered but violated SEBI regulations, that complaint goes through SEBI SCORES rather than cybercrime.gov.in.

The channels are not mutually exclusive. In cases involving significant financial loss and potential criminal conduct, filing on both SCORES and cybercrime.gov.in simultaneously is appropriate.

What Should You Gather Before You Start Filing Your Complaint?

The cybercrime portal allows you to upload documents to support your complaint. Having these ready before you start the filing process saves significant time.

Screenshots of all conversations with the fraudster, whether on WhatsApp, Telegram, email, or social media. Timestamps must be visible.

Bank transaction records and UPI screenshots showing the money you paid, with the payee name and account number clearly visible.

Screenshots of the fraudulent website, app, or social media profile. Any promotional material, investment statement screenshots, or “profit” screenshots shown to you before you paid.

Your own identification document for the filing itself.

If money was transferred through UPI, the UPI transaction ID is critical evidence. Share it in your complaint description.

How to File a Cyber Crime Complaint Online?

Once you have your evidence ready, here’s how to actually file your complaint on the portal.

    Go to cybercrime.gov.in.

On the top menu, click  Register a Complaint, then select the relevant fraud category, Financial Fraud, in most investment and trading scam cases.

You’ll then be given the choice to report anonymously or to register with your identity.

Choose the option that suits your situation and click Register a Complaint.

On the next page, click File a Complaint, then I Accept. This takes you to a page listing the checklist of details and documents you’ll need, along with a login option.

If you’re a new user, click Click Here for New User and complete your registration by entering your details.

Once registered, log in using your username, mobile number, OTP, and CAPTCHA.

    Then complete the filing:

    • Fill in the incident details, selecting the category and entering the approximate date and time.
    • Enter the name and any ID details you have for the suspect.
    • Upload your supporting evidence.
    • Enter your details and the address of your nearest police station.
    • Review everything carefully, then click Submit.

Once submitted, you’ll receive an acknowledgement number, which you can use to track your complaint status going forward, as covered in the next section.

    What Happens After You File?

After submission, you receive an acknowledgement number. This number lets you track your complaint status on the portal.

Cybercrime complaints are forwarded to the police jurisdiction relevant to the complaint.

In financial fraud cases involving significant amounts, the complaint may be taken up by a dedicated cyber cell rather than a local police station.

The investigation timeline varies significantly by the amount involved and the state’s cyber cell capacity. Follow up on your complaint status every two weeks.

If no action is visible after 30 days, visit the cybercrime portal and use the track complaint feature to see the status.

What Are Your Options If Nothing Happens After Filing Your Report?

If your cybercrime portal complaint does not result in visible action within 30 to 45 days, two additional steps are available.

The first is to visit your nearest police station and file a First Information Report directly. Bring a printed copy of your cybercrime portal acknowledgement as supporting documentation.

The FIR creates a formal police record that the online complaint alone may not.

The second is to send a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police of your district with a copy to the State Cyber Cell.

This escalates visibility on your case without requiring you to follow the portal timeline alone.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Where do I file a cyber crime complaint in India?

File at cybercrime.gov.in, India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. For financial fraud, select the Financial Fraud category during the complaint process.

You will need to register as a user with your mobile number before filing.

    2. Can I file a cyber crime complaint anonymously?

Yes. The cybercrime portal offers the option to file anonymously without sharing your identity.

However, anonymous complaints are harder for authorities to investigate because they cannot contact you for additional information.

Filing with your identity registered generally produces faster follow-up.

    3. What if the scammer used a foreign phone number or foreign account?

File the complaint anyway, documenting all the details you have. The portal is designed to handle cross-border cyber fraud as well.

Include every phone number, UPI ID, and bank account detail you have in the complaint, even if they appear to be foreign numbers.

Indian cyber cells coordinate with international agencies for significant fraud cases.

    4. How do I track my cyber crime complaint status?

Log in to cybercrime.gov.in with your registered credentials and use the Track Complaint option. Enter your acknowledgement number to see the current status.

    5. Should I also file on SEBI SCORES for investment fraud?

If the entity was SEBI-registered, yes. File on SEBI SCORES for the regulatory complaint and on cybercrime.gov.in for the criminal complaint simultaneously.

Both can proceed in parallel, and they serve different purposes. SCORES seeks regulatory action and potential fee recovery. The cybercrime complaint initiates a criminal investigation.
