sebi penalty against motilal oswal

Quick Summary

SEBI has passed five adjudication orders imposing penalties on Motilal Oswal Financial Services (INZ000158836) since April 2022. The amounts are ₹25 lakh, ₹5 lakh, ₹7 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹11 lakh, a total of ₹51 lakh. The orders cover client fund handling, client data mismatches and control over authorised persons. This page lists each order with its date, officer, amount and subject, then links to a dedicated page and the original order on sebi.gov.in.

Every SEBI penalty order ends with the same quiet instruction: pay within 45 days.

Motilal Oswal has received that instruction five times since April 2022, and most investors never heard about it.

A fine of a few lakh rarely makes headlines against a broker this size, so the details stay buried in PDFs on the regulator’s site.

We opened every one of them, and this page tells you what SEBI found, who decided it, and what each order cost the firm.

If you are wondering whether any of it touches your own account, keep reading, because one of these five may sound very familiar.

Every fact comes from the SEBI orders themselves.

How Many SEBI Penalty Orders Has Motilal Oswal Received Since 2022?

Five. Each one is an adjudication order passed by a SEBI Adjudicating Officer after an inspection of the broker.

SEBI has imposed five penalties on Motilal Oswal totalling ₹51 lakh between April 2022 and March 2026.

Adjudicating Officers decide whether rules were broken and set the penalty.

Their orders are public, and each carries a 45-day payment window.

Date Adjudicating Officer Main subject Penalty
April 29, 2022 Barnali Mukherjee Client funds, margin reporting, client funding, CKYC ₹25 lakh
December 31, 2024 Amar Navlani Mobile and email mismatches on client codes ₹5 lakh

June 9, 2025 Amit Kapoor Control over authorised persons ₹3 lakh
August 12, 2025 Amar Navlani Joint inspection lapses ₹11 lakh

The total comes to ₹51 lakh across the five orders.

Settlement orders and orders against group companies are not counted here because they are different kinds of outcomes.

What Did SEBI Find in the April 2022 Order?

This is the largest penalty of the five at ₹25 lakh.

SEBI inspected the firm’s broking and depository work from August 19 to September 6, 2019, covering April 2018 to August 2019.

The order lists four alleged violations: use of client credit balances for other purposes, a margin shortfall reported at ₹16.84 crore, client funding beyond the allowed period, and gaps in CKYC uploads.

The penalty has two parts.

SEBI imposed ₹20 lakh under Section 23D of the SCRA and ₹5 lakh under Section 15HB of the SEBI Act.

Why Was Motilal Oswal Penalised in December 2024?

The December 31, 2024 order is narrower.

SEBI examined whether several clients shared the same mobile number or email address under their unique client codes.

The inspection period ran from April 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023.

The Adjudicating Officer imposed ₹5 lakh under Section 15HB and noted that email mismatches were repetitive.

Why does this matter to you?

Registered contact details are how a broker sends you contract notes and alerts.

A mismatch can leave you unaware of trades in your own account.

If that ever happened to you, our page on Motilal Oswal unauthorised trading shows how investors proved trades they never placed.

What Was the ₹7 Lakh Penalty in January 2025?

On January 30, 2025, SEBI penalised the firm ₹7 lakh after a joint inspection by SEBI, the stock exchanges and the depositories.

The inspection period was April 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

The amount is split across three sections: ₹1 lakh under Section 15A(c), ₹1 lakh under Section 15C, and ₹5 lakh under Section 15HB.

The order itself refers to earlier penalty orders against the firm.

Media reports at the time also carried complaint and fund-handling figures from the order, which we cover on the dedicated page.

If a broker leaves your complaint unanswered for weeks, you do not have to wait.

A SEBI SCORES complaint puts the issue on record with SEBI, and the broker must reply on the platform.

What Did SEBI Say About Authorised Persons in June 2025?

The June 9, 2025 order came from a thematic inspection titled Control over Authorised Persons.

SEBI inspected on March 1 and 4, 2024, covering April 2022 to January 2024.

The alleged lapses included verification of trading terminals at one authorised person and the examination of inspection reports of authorised persons.

The Adjudicating Officer imposed a penalty of ₹3 lakh.

Authorised persons are the agents who bring clients to a broker.

The broker stays responsible for supervising them.

That responsibility is why the next step matters if you dealt with an agent.

Our guide on how to file complaint against stock broker shows how a dispute with an agent travels up to the broker and then the exchange.

What Was the ₹11 Lakh Penalty in August 2025?

On August 12, 2025, SEBI imposed ₹11 lakh under Section 15HB after a joint inspection in January 2024.

The inspection period was April 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023.

The order cites a SEBI master circular for stock brokers, a 2016 SEBI circular, and an NSE circular dated December 16, 2022.

Reports at the time linked it to delayed settlement of funds for inactive clients.

When a settlement goes wrong, exchange arbitration is the route that can return money.

Our page on how to file complaint in NSE explains when a complaint can move to arbitration.

What Do These Five Orders Show About Motilal Oswal?

Three themes repeat.

Client money handling, client data accuracy, and supervision of authorised persons appear across the orders.

Penalties of this size are small beside the firm’s scale.

They still matter, because each one is a finding by the regulator after an inspection.

They also leave your rights untouched.

A SEBI penalty goes to the government, not to clients, and it does not decide any individual client’s dispute.

Can You Recover Money After a SEBI Penalty Against Your Broker?

Not through the penalty itself.

Recovery comes from your own complaint, backed by your contract notes, ledgers, and call records.

If you lost money on trades you did not place, or your funds were held back, build the file now.

Dates fade fast.

Conclusion

Five orders, ₹51 lakh and three themes that keep returning: client money handling, client data accuracy and supervision of authorised persons. Each order is a regulator’s finding after an inspection, and each is public for you to read.

But a penalty goes to the government, not to clients, so it never settles your own dispute.

If something here sounds familiar, pull your contract notes, check your registered details, and put your complaint in writing while the dates are still fresh.
